When asked how he started business and what inspired him to venture into the business, he states that he has always been passionate about scientific research and this was the first thing that pulled him towards establishing his own clinical research lab. He states that his passion developed from when he was young after watching a family member get sick and suffer because the treatment regimen administered was simply too harsh on him. What really pained him about the entire situation was the fact that the patient almost died from chemotherapy and not the cancer itself.

 

Clay states that there are several ways in which they make money at Seattle Genetics. He adds that the first drug that they have successfully tested with the FDA is already in the market and has been retailing in more than 60 countries. He adds that even though getting a drug FDA approval is an extremely expensive process, it was necessary for them. Another thing that Clay states is that patience is very important in his industry. He confides that the company became profitable ten years after the IPO and that at times, things did get pretty thick, but they made it through it anyway. Clay states that the one quality that sets him apart from the others in his field is his hard work, which is also the reason he is so successful.
